Maxwell Leads Lakers to 4th Place Finish at Wartburg Invite
The Iowa Lakes men's golf team started their spring campaign with a 4th place finish at the fourteen team Wartburg Spring Invitational by posting a two day total of 598 at Prairie Links Golf Club in Waverly, Iowa this weekend. The Lakers finished fourteen shots behind team champion Des Moines Area Community College who posted a 584. Leading the way for the Lakers was sophomore Cameron Maxwell who posted a two day total of one under par 143, which was good enough for second place individually.
"This was a great tournament this early in the season. We have had a couple of cancellations, so this was our first tournament of the spring and the boys did not disappoint," commented Head Coach Jarvis Weber. "We knew we were going to be in a very tough conference this spring and this tournament showed us just how tough it is going to be to win. Of the fourteen teams in the event, the top four were all from our region along with five of the top seven, so it speaks volumes to the depth and talent that the ICCAC has this year."
Rounding out the other scores for the Lakers were sophomore Morgan Edwards with a 149 good enough for a T-11th finish, freshman Trace Jacobson posting 151, good enough for a T-16th finish, sophomore Carlton Rahn with a 155 and a T-27th finish, and sophomore Aaron James with a 163 and a T-46th finish. There were 85 players in the field.
"I was very proud of the way Cameron kept his composure for all 36 holes. He played very consistent, and very good golf both days with splits of 37,35,36, and 35. He has absolutely worked his tail off this off-season and this was exactly what he needed to show him that hard work does not go unrewarded. Hopefully this will fuel him for a deep run this spring and start to push the team to match his intensity and scoring," added Coach Weber.
The Lakers will not have much time to sit down as they will be competing on Monday the 8th at the ICCAC Spring Preview at Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames, Iowa.
