Lakers Struggle in Illinois

Iowa Lakes sent 8 men to compete at the Battle of Mississippi. Black Hawk College hosted the 36-hole event at Fyre Lake Golf Club. Fyre Lake is a beautiful 18-hole course designed by Jack Nicklaus. The tournament featured 14 JUCO teams. Half the field is located west of the Mississippi River, and half is located east. This was a traditional tournament, along with a side competition to determine the "Battle of Mississippi". Northeast CC won the team event, beating Black Hawk and Heartland by one stroke. West Side of the Mississippi won the side competition thanks to Northeast, DMACC, and Iowa Central.

After the first day, Iowa Lakes was sitting tied for last place due to a disappointing +52 team total. The Lakers carded a +43 second round to wrap up the tournament at +95 (12th place). On the individual side, Jayden Manthei earned a top-20 finish after two solid rounds of golf. The rest of the men finished between 50th and 82nd out of 84 total individuals.

"This was disappointing. Our lack of preparation and focus at practice has been an issue all fall, and this was a course that exposed our weaknesses. Fyre Lake was our first real test to see how much distance control, accuracy, and course management. We didn't adapt to the unique challenges Fyre Lake presents and continued to make the same mistakes both days. Hopefully, we can use this tournament as a wake-up call to adjust where our focus is at practice and polish the problem areas. Jayden had another solid tournament. Only 2/84 players finished 36 holes without a double bogey or worse; Jayden was one of them," said Coach Myers. "Other than the Quad Cup, we have one more event against a stacked field to show what we're capable of. We need some guys to step up in order to close out the fall on a positive note."
