Thirty Six Hits Propels Iowa Lakes to Two Wins

The Iowa Lakes Community College Softball team picked up two more wins on the weekend. They slugged thirty six hits in twelve innings in the wins. The Lakers won game one 14-0 in five innings and game two 12-6. Iowa Lakes is now 4-0 on the year.

GAME 1: 14 (ILCC), 0 (SCC) 5 innings

           Iowa Lakes came out with a bang, scoring nine runs in the first inning. Alyssa Thorson and Bryn Bohmann each hit a double, before both runners scored on a MacKenna Jones homerun. With the bases now cleared, Baylee O'Donnell got the offense rolling again with a single. Sydnee Swiggum followed with a single of her own, advancing O'Donnell to third. Abby Zahn stepped up and drove a ball to the grass to score O'Donnell. Kiaya Dunbar then hit her first homerun of the season to put the Lakers up 7-0. Macy Alderson singled and stole second, before scoring on Thorson's second double of the inning.  Thorson crossed the plate on a single from Bohmann. With the Lakers up 9-0, MacKenna Jones sat Southeast down in order with a groundout, strikeout, and flyout.

           The Lakers were held scoreless until the fourth inning when Jones led off with a single and was followed by an O'Donnell homerun. Hernandez kept things going with a single and stolen base. Swiggum drove her in on a single and advanced to second on a Storm error. She then crossed the plate on a Dunbar single. The Lakers then loaded the bases on back to back singles from Alderson and Thorson. Bohmann picked up her second RBI of the game on a fielder's choice, scoring Dunbar for the final run of the game.

           Alyssa Thorson was a perfect 4-4 at the plate with three doubles. MacKenna Jones and Kiaya Dunbar each had two hits and three RBIs for the Lakers. MacKenna Jones picked up her second straight win, allowing zero runs on two hits and ten strikeouts.

GAME 2: 12 (ILCC), 6 (ECC)

            The start of game two was eerily similar to the start of game one. Thorson and Bohmann each singled, before scoring on Jones' second homerun of the day. Not to be outdone, O'Donnell followed with her second homerun of the day as well. Southeast also got on the scoreboard in the first, with a homerun of their own.

            Alderson led off the second inning with a double and then scored on a single from Jones to put the Lakers up 5-1. The Storm were shutdown in order in the bottom of the second. O'Donnell got two flyouts and a strikeout.

            The fourth inning saw nine runs cross the plate between the two teams. Alderson led off with a single and then used her wheels to steal second. Thorson then blasted a ball over the centerfield fence. Bohmann followed with a double and then advanced on a sacrifice fly to right. O'Donnell doubled to score Bohmann to put the Lakers up 9-1. The Lakers got themselves in some trouble in the bottom of the inning, allowing five runs on seven hits and one walk.

            With the score now 9-6, the Lakers had some work to do. Madison Goosmann led off the fifth inning with a single. She advanced to second on an Alderson single, before scoring on Thorson's fielder's choice and Southeast error. Bohmann then cleared the bases to put the Lakers up12-6. With Jayda Staige in relief, the Storm could not score any more runs.

            Baylee O'Donnell and Madison Goosmann each were 3-4 at the plate. Alyssa Thorson and Bryn Bohmann were each 3-5 with two runs batted in. Baylee O'Donnell picked up the win for the Lakers, pitching 3.1 innings. She allowed six earned runs on nine hits and two walks, while striking out five. Jayda Staige was great in relief. She pitched 3.2 innings, allowing zero runs on three hits, one walk, and striking out five.

            Iowa Lakes is back in action for their final double header of the weekend. They will take on Cloud County Community College at 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM.
