The Iowa Lakes Community College Softball team competed hard against #9 DMACC and #4 Kirkwood. The Lakers are now 20-12 overall and 3-9 in conference.
GAME 1: 7 (DMACC), 1 (ILCC)
DMACC struck early in the top of the first inning, capitalizing on a pair of Laker errors to plate the game's first run.
The Bears continued to build momentum midway through the game. In the fourth inning, DMACC added another run on an RBI double to extend the lead to 2-0. The fifth inning proved pivotal, as the Bears strung together multiple hits to push across another run and take a 3-0 advantage.
DMACC broke the game open in the sixth inning with a three-run home run, extending the lead to 7-0 and putting the game out of reach.
The Lakers managed to get on the board in the late innings. Katie Kvigne delivered a clutch single to right field, while Karlee Akers hustled around to score on a defensive miscue, cutting the deficit to 7-1.
Offensively, Karlee Akers was 2-3 with one run scored, while Katie Kvigne added one hit and one RBI. Katie Kvigne took the loss, throwing 4.2 innings. She allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits and three strikeouts. Morgan Fine threw 2.1 innings, allowing four runs, one earned on four hits and two walks.
GAME 2: 6 (DMACC), 0 (ILCC)
The Iowa Lakes Community College Lakers fell to the DMACC Bears in a conference matchup, as the Bears used a big third inning to secure a 6-0 victory.
The game opened as a pitcher's duel, with both teams held scoreless through the first inning. Iowa Lakes' defense, led by Akers and Wheeler on the infield, recorded three quick outs to keep the Bears off the board early.
DMACC broke through in the second inning, using an error and a sacrifice fly to take a 1-0 lead. The Bears then delivered the decisive blow in the third inning, capitalizing on multiple hits and Laker miscues to plate five runs and extend the lead to 6-0.
At the plate, the Lakers were again led by Karlee Akers who went 2-3. Kaitlyn DuChateau added a hit in the game as well. Despite the loss, Macy Pickett threw a great game. She allowed six runs, zero earned, on seven hits and one strikeout.
GAME 3: 7 (KCC), 2 (ILCC)
The Iowa Lakes Community College Lakers dropped a conference matchup to Kirkwood Community College by a final score of 7-2 on Sunday.
The Lakers came out strong in the bottom of the first inning, taking advantage of a Kirkwood error to jump out to an early 2-0 lead.
Korilynn Christians reached base when she was hit by a pitch. She then advanced to second on a single from Addison Wheeler. Gracie Knobloch then hit a ground ball to the third basemen, that she threw into right field, scoring both Christians and Wheeler and giving the Lakers an early 2-0 lead.
Kirkwood responded in the third inning, capitalizing on a pair of errors to even the game at 2-2 before adding another run later in the frame to take a 3-2 lead.
The game remained within reach until the sixth inning when Kirkwood broke things open. The Eagles used a combination of extra-base hits and timely power, including two home runs, to plate four runs and extend their lead to 7-2.
Addison Wheeler led the offense, going 2-3 with a run scored. Kenzie Enter and Charli Abernathy each added two hits of their own. Katie Kvigne suffered the loss, throwing 5.1 innings. She allowed seven runs, five earned, on eleven hits and two walks, while striking out two. Morgan Fine threw 1.1 innings, allowing one hit.
GAME 4: 12 (KCC), 3 (ILCC)
Kirkwood wasted no time getting on the board in the first inning, stringing together multiple extra-base hits to take an early 2-0 lead. The Eagles continued to apply pressure throughout the game, using timely hitting and aggressive baserunning to build their advantage.
The Lakers answered in the third inning when Wheeler delivered an RBI single that brought home DuChateau, who walked, to cut the deficit to 2-1. Iowa Lakes continued to battle offensively, creating scoring opportunities in the middle innings.
However, Kirkwood responded with a big fourth inning, plating four runs on a series of hits and capitalizing on defensive miscues to extend the lead to 6-1. The Eagles added three more runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run home run, pushing the margin to 9-1.
Iowa Lakes showed resilience in the bottom half of the fifth, DuChateau walked and then advanced to second on a groundout from Christians. Wheeler then grounded out, advanced DuChateau to third. The Eagles attempted to get DuChateau out advancing to third, but overthrew the ball, allowing DuChateau to scamper home.
The Lakers added another run in the sixth inning when Akers singled and then scored on a Marrissa Miller double.
Karlee Akers was 2-3 at the plate with a run scored. Addison Wheeler and Marrissa Miller each added a hit with a run batted in. Macy Pickett suffered the loss, throwing 3.2 innings. She allowed six runs, five earned, on seven hits and two walks, while striking out one. Morgan Fine threw 1.2 innings, allowing six runs, five earned, on five hits and one walk. Gracie Knobloch threw .2 innings, recording one strikeout.
The Lakers will travel to Norfolk, Nebraska to take on Northeast Community College at 2:00 and 4:00 PM on Tuesday, March 31st.
