Estherville, IA – The Iowa Lakes Lakers women's basketball team hit the road this past weekend to compete in the Johnson County Classic, taking on two strong opponents from Kansas.
In their opening matchup, the Lakers battled hard against #1-ranked Johnson County Community College. Despite a determined effort and a strong presence on the glass—pulling down 17 offensive rebounds—the Lakers fell 30–70. Zoey Wooten led Iowa Lakes with 10 points.
The Lakers bounced back on Saturday with an impressive response against Highland Community College. Iowa Lakes amped up its defensive intensity, forcing 40 turnovers and controlling the pace from start to finish in an 82–45 win.
Four Lakers scored in double figures, led by Zoey Wooten with 21 points. Shanya Glover added 18, Erica Welsh scored 13, and Carley Lewellen chipped in 10.
Coach Martin commented, "We saw a lot of growth and improvement this weekend. Really proud of how hard we played and the energy we played with. We look forward to continuing to grow and improve."
The Lakers move to 2–2 on the season and will return to action next weekend when they travel to Marshalltown, Iowa to compete in the Marshalltown Classic. The Lakers will face #24-ranked Parkland College on Friday, November 14 at 1:00 p.m., and take on #12-ranked Rock Valley Community College on Saturday, November 15 at 1:00 p.m.
The Lakers next home game will be Tuesday, November 18th when they host Mt. Mercy University JV at 5:30pm.
