The Iowa Lakes wrestling team opened its dual season Wednesday night against one of the nation's most formidable opponents, hosting No. 3-ranked Iowa Central. Despite competing hard in several tight matches, the Lakers came up short, falling 44-4 to the nationally ranked Tritons.
Competitive Start Against a Top-Tier Opponent
The dual marked the first official home appearance of the 2025-26 season for the Lakers, who entered ranked No. 10 in the latest NJCAA poll. Facing a powerful Iowa Central lineup filled with returning national qualifiers, Iowa Lakes battled throughout but struggled to convert close positions into wins.
"Our guys knew this was a big test right out of the gate," said Head Coach Corey Meyer. "You don't get better without wrestling the best, and Iowa Central is one of those programs that forces you to find another level."
Bright Spot for the Lakers
The lone victory for the Lakers came from Jacob Range, who earned a major decision to give Iowa Lakes its four team points of the night.
"Jacob showed exactly the kind of toughness we're looking for," Meyer said. "He stayed composed after giving up the first takedown and was able to score in bunches after that."
Building from the Experience
While the Tritons recorded several bonus-point wins, Meyer emphasized that the score doesn't tell the whole story. "We had opportunities in a few matches that slipped away," he noted. "If we finish those positions and wrestle with that same energy for a full seven minutes, we'll start seeing different results."
The Lakers will use the dual as a measuring stick as they continue their early-season stretch. "We're still building and learning to wrestle at a high level," Meyer said. "It's about steady progress — we'll take what we learned tonight and get back to work."
