Will Penn Shines as Iowa Lakes Battles No. 1 Indian Hills

The Iowa Lakes wrestling team faced one of the toughest tests in the nation, squaring off against No. 1-ranked Indian Hills in a dual loaded with nationally ranked and returning national champions.

Despite the 47–5 final score, Iowa Lakes showed it belongs on the mat with the country's best, highlighted by a dominant performance from William Penn at 149 pounds.

Penn, ranked in the national top 10, put on a clinic against Ryan Singleton, earning a 15–0 technical fall. From the opening whistle, Penn dictated the pace, controlled the center of the mat, and capitalized on every opening — a performance that underscored his ability to compete with anyone in the country.

Several Lakers pushed elite opponents deep into matches. At 141 pounds, Logan McDonald went toe-to-toe with Gavyn Whitehead, a returning national champion and the No. 1-ranked wrestler in the nation. McDonald stayed composed, created scoring opportunities, and forced Whitehead to wrestle a full, hard match. At 197 pounds, Damien Spears nearly pulled off a statement win against Andrew Marquez, a returning national champion ranked No. 2 nationally. Spears kept the match tight and competitive throughout, showing poise and toughness buit was unable to pull off the upset.

"Will's performance was exactly what we expect from him, and Logan and Damien proved they belong on the same mat as national champions," said head coach Corey Meyer. "Those are the moments that matter. The tougher the match, the more it prepares us for the postseason."

Throughout the dual, Iowa Lakes consistently matched up against nationally ranked opponents across the lineup, using the opportunity to measure itself against the best competition in the country.

Iowa Lakes will continue to seek out elite opponents as part of its commitment to development, believing that facing the best sharpens the team for conference championships and the national tournament.
