In the 2nd match of the year, #18 Iowa Lakes played #13 Ann Arundal. This was the 2nd game at the Juco Kickoff Classic for both teams, both teams losing by one goal in the opener. The stage was set for a terrific match.
In the first half less then 6 minutes in Sophomore Ines Balaghni opened her account with an impressive bit of ball contral and a great shot. Iowa Lakes doubled the lead in the 23rd minute as another sophmore Chanell make a terific undelapping run from he defensive position to slot a far post shot past the Ann Arundal keeper. The Lakers in fact out shot Ann Arundal 13 to 4 in the first half.
In the 2nd half the depth of the Ann Arundal team started to fatigue the Lakers players. The Iowa Lakes team still out shot their opponents 8-4 in this half. But could not score to put the game away. Freshman Keeper Holly Poole had five saves, and got her first shutout of her carrer. She ended the weekend with an impressive 91% save percentage.
After the match, the Iowa Lakes Women's Soccer congratulated the Ann Arundal team on a great performance, widhed them luck with the hope of seeing them at the National Tournament. We will see what happens. Two games vs two ranked teams and coming away with a split, has the Lakes looking forward to the remaining 14 games of the season with optimisum.
Next weekend the Lakers will be at home in Spencer for the Iowa Lakes Invintational, where the will see Western Nebraska and St. Louis.
