Iowa Lakes Community College powered to a commanding 7–0 win today, showcasing offensive firepower and strong team chemistry from start to finish.
The Lakers wasted no time taking control, striking just eight minutes into the match. Mahee Montenegro delivered a pinpoint laser pass to Ines Balaghni, who buried the opening goal. Iowa Lakes doubled their lead in the 21st minute when Maddy Waterhouse converted off a crisp assist from Zoe Lawrence. Seven minutes later, Ana Zamorano capitalized on a setup from Mia Kamei, giving the Lakers a comfortable 3–0 advantage heading into halftime.
The second half saw the Lakers continue their relentless attack. In the 52nd minute, Zamorano struck again, finishing from a clever feed by Montenegro. Just five minutes later, Emma Fournier added her name to the scoresheet, assisted by Balaghni. On a 64th-minute corner kick, the duo reversed roles, with Balaghni kneeing in Fournier's driven cross. The scoring was capped in the 79th minute, as Waterhouse netted her second of the game off an assist from Balaghni, sealing the dominant 7–0 result.
"The team is playing really together and connected," said Louis Krueger, men's keeper. "Not relying on a few big stars, but instead as one group."
The victory came against a St. Louis squad that had traveled and was playing its second game in as many days, but Iowa Lakes made sure to take full advantage. The Lakers also seem to be finding their rhythm under new head coach Mukwa Ogitchida, growing in confidence and chemistry with each outing.
Fans filtered in slowly with the early 10 a.m. kickoff following Sunday church services, but the atmosphere soon came alive. The local U12 girls' soccer team and members of the Iowa Lakes men's wrestling program chased down balls and brought extra energy to the sidelines, adding to the sense of community support.
Player Spotlight: Ines Balaghni
Balaghni delivered a standout performance, scoring twice and adding two assists while showing her versatility across the attack. She started on the right wing at the #7 position, later shifted centrally into the #10 roll, and closed the match on the left side as the #11. Her ability to adapt across the frontline while remaining a constant threat made her one of the most influential players on the field.
With the win, Iowa Lakes improves to 3–1 overall. The Lakers will face their toughest test yet on Wednesday against Iowa Western (4–0–1) in a key early-season matchup.
