Nobody is doing the Lakers any favors. Following a solid weekend performance in Marshalltown, Iowa Lakes returned home to face the Kirkwood Eagles. The Eagles came in ranked #19 Nationally, third place in the ICCAC, and having defeated Iowa Central last week who were previously undefeated in the ICCAC. On paper Kirkwood [21-13] seemed to be heavy favorites to defeat the [6-24] Lakers. The Lakers would have some say in that. The Eagles prevailed with a 3-0 win, but the Lakers did not roll over. Set scores were, 23-25, 9-25 and 22-25.
Coach Turnbull commented, "We did a lot of things right in that first set. We served it well, passed & defended extremely well and stayed aggressive on the attack. In the second set we never got anything on track and got kicked around."
In the third set the Eagles just picked up and opened up with an 8-0 run before the Lakers took a timeout. The Lakers then outscored the Eagles 10-2 to tie the set at 10-10. From there both teams squared up for some great volleyball until the Eagles finished it with a 25-22 win.
Turnbull added, "Considering all our shortcomings, we are so close to getting over the hump. This has been a tough mountain to climb and I am confident we are going to get to where we can close out on one of these teams. Kirkwood is outstanding and we made too many ball handling mistakes and attack errors to beat a team this good. Plus, Kirkwood swung it very well and our blocking was non-existent tonight."
Coach Turnbull also wanted to point an outstanding night from freshmen Lindsey Jensen. "Lindsey filled the stat sheet tonight; 7 Kills, 1 block,15 digs and she passed at a 90% clip."
