The second season for Iowa Lakes Women's Wrestling came to an end at the NJCAA National Invite in Council Bluffs, IA over the weekend.
Keyahna Phillips, a freshman from Chicago, IL, finished 5th in the nation at the 160 pound weight class, earning her All-American honors, a program first.
"It was a great moment for her, she battled through a tough tournament and needed to beat some real good opponents to get on that podium. It was great for the program too, having Iowa Lakes push through shows the steps we're taking as a program" Said Head Coach Corey Muniz.
The Team finished 12th.
"I want to first take this time to shout out our Sophomore competitors, Kylie Hessenius, Alex Carty, Isabel Jues, and Leila Kollasch. They were all members of the first ever team here on campus and have pushed this program to new heights as well. Now, we didn't the performace from them that we wanted, be the pride I have for them reaches beyond the mat" Said Muniz. "We improved on last years performance, and its just as much due to them as anyone else on this team. I am forever grateful for them and I am extremly excited for what is next for them!"
Besides Phillips, The Lakers earned victories from Holly Garrett (2), Willow Stewart (2), and Nina Aceves (1), all freshman for Iowa Lakes.
"It's great momentum for next year. All three being freshman sets the stage for the future. A majority of this team this year is returning, which positions us for a big opportunity for the upcoming year to continute to grow. We have worked really hard all year, battling injuries and adversity every week it seems. Seing Holly make the quarters, Willow get to the second session, and Nina battling each match, gets me excited" said Corey.
