Iowa Lakes Women Shine at York University Women’s Open

The Iowa Lakes Community College women's wrestling team turned in a strong performance at the York University Women's Open, highlighted by multiple podium finishes and championship runs across both the Open and Amateur divisions.

In the Open Division at 235 pounds, Iowa Lakes claimed the top spot as Brooklyn Robinson captured first place with an impressive tournament. Robinson recorded two falls, including a championship-round pin over teammate Brenda Valenzuela at the 2:14 mark, to earn nine team points. Valenzuela battled through a tough bracket to finish third, adding valuable experience at the open level.

The Amateur Division saw Iowa Lakes athletes make deep runs throughout the weight classes. Anika Stearns (117 lbs) delivered one of the tournament's standout performances, finishing third while scoring 16.5 team points. Stearns posted two technical falls and capped her run with a third-place match pin over Juliet Baca.

At 131 pounds, Abigail Ji advanced to the finals after three straight victories, including two falls, before finishing second following a hard-fought championship bout. Ji's runner-up finish accounted for 17 team points.

Iowa Lakes earned its second individual title in the Amateur Division behind Keyahna Phillips (180 lbs), who dominated the bracket with three consecutive falls. Phillips pinned all three opponents in a combined time of just over two minutes to secure the championship and 20 team points.

Additional placers included Michelle Ramirez (138 lbs), who fought through the consolation rounds to take sixth, and Soledad Luchman (207 lbs), who earned a fifth-place finish. Both wrestlers showed resilience with multiple matches in the back side of the bracket.

Several Lakers gained valuable mat time despite falling short of the podium, including Diana Llanos (110 lbs), who opened with a decision win, Stevy Griffin (124 lbs) with a consolation-round pin, and Aroura Preston, Nina Aceves, Savanna Salen, and others competing in deep, competitive fields.

Overall, Iowa Lakes showcased depth, toughness, and championship-level performances, leaving the York University Women's Open with multiple finalists, two champions, and strong momentum heading into the rest of the season.
