Lakers take down Southwestern at home, 73-61

Estherville, Iowa — January 31, 2026 —
The Iowa Lakes Community College men's basketball team used a strong second-half performance to defeat Southwestern Community College, 73–61, Saturday afternoon at the Iowa Lakes Gymnasium.

Iowa Lakes led 27–23 at halftime before pulling away after the break, outscoring Southwestern 46–38 over the final 20 minutes. The Lakers improved their efficiency in the second half and controlled the paint to secure the conference win.

Lakers' Offensive Leaders

Sophomore guard Jermaine Freeman led Iowa Lakes with a game-high 23 points, shooting 7-of-16 from the field while adding six assists and two steals in 40 minutes of action. Steven Martinez followed with 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting and knocked down five free throws.

Dominic Preiser finished with 8 points, 12 rebounds. Byron Maina added eight points, while Jack Wadlington contributed six points and four assists. Cooper Harris finished with four points, four rebounds, and three assists, and Jorge Castro had 4 points, 7 rebounds.

Team Performance

Iowa Lakes shot 43.3 percent from the field and 27.8 percent from three-point range (5-of-18), while converting 16-of-21 (76.2 percent) from the free-throw line. The Lakers controlled the glass with a 41–27 rebounding advantage and held the edge in the paint, 36–20, along with a 14–9 advantage in second-chance points.
