The Iowa Lakes women's basketball team earned a strong road victory Wednesday night, defeating Marshalltown 67–57 behind a balanced offensive effort, key defensive stops, and a dominant performance on the glass.
The Lakers set the tone early, opening the game with a 15–7 first-quarter lead through aggressive defense and efficient scoring. Iowa Lakes continued to control the pace in the second quarter, carrying a 26–19 advantage into halftime. Marshalltown made a push in the third quarter, narrowing the gap with a 20-point frame, but the Lakers responded with poise. Iowa Lakes closed the night with a powerful 25-point fourth quarter to pull away and secure the win.
A major factor in the victory was Iowa Lakes' work on the boards, as the Lakers controlled the glass and outrebounded Marshalltown 39–30.
Tavara Swonger led the offensive effort with 18 points, including a strong 10-of-12 performance at the free-throw line. Zoey Wooten added 17 points on 8-of-14 shooting, while Baakir Christian contributed 10 points and 6 rebounds.
Coach Ashley Martin praised the team's effort, saying, "Really proud of our team's gritty perseverance tonight. This was a tough road battle, and our group showed a lot of toughness and composure when the game tightened up. We made the effort plays, stayed together, and found a way to finish strong."
The win improves Iowa Lakes to 8-3 on the season and 4-0 in conference play. The Lakers return to action this Saturday, December 12 when they take on #11 NIACC in Mason City, IA at 1:00 p.m.
Iowa Lakes' next home game is Wednesday, December 17, against Iowa Western Community College at 5:30 p.m., which will be their final game before the holiday break.
