No. 19 Iowa Lakes Defeats No. 22 Northeast on the Road

NORFOLK, Neb. — The No. 19 Iowa Lakes Community College women's basketball team earned a ranked road victory Wednesday night, defeating No. 22 Northeast Community College 79–68 in Norfolk, Nebraska, on Wednesday, January 28.

After trailing 21–14 at the end of the first quarter, the Lakers responded with a dominant second period, outscoring the Hawks 26–9 to take control of the game. Iowa Lakes continued its strong play in the second half, scoring 22 points in the third quarter and 17 more in the fourth to secure the win.

Tavara Swonger led the Lakers with 18 points, while Zoey Wooten added 17 points. Erica Welsh scored 14 points, and Baakir Christian finished with 10 points. Christian led Iowa Lakes with nine rebounds, while Wooten pulled down eight rebounds. Wooten also recorded seven steals, and Swonger added six steals as the Lakers forced turnovers throughout the night. Iowa Lakes scored 33 points off turnovers.

"This was a tough road win against a really good Northeast team," said head coach Ashley Martin. "I was proud of our total team effort and really pleased with our defensive intensity throughout the game."

With the victory, the Lakers improved to 12–2 in conference play and 16–5 overall.

The Lakers will next play Southwestern Community College in Estherville on Saturday, January 31, with tipoff scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
