ESTHERVILLE, Iowa —The postseason begins Saturday, February 28, as the Iowa Lakes Community College women's basketball team hosts Northeast Community College in the opening round of the NJCAA Division II Region 11-B Tournament in Estherville.
The Lakers enter the tournament as the No. 3 seed with a 19-10 overall record and 15-7 conference record, earning the tiebreaker over Iowa Central after splitting the season series and finishing 1-1 against NIACC. Iowa Lakes competed throughout the year against a challenging conference schedule that featured multiple nationally ranked teams.
Iowa Lakes is led by a balanced group on both ends of the floor, highlighted by the scoring of Zoey Wooten, along with the versatility of Tavara Swonger, Shanya Glover, Tahlea Tirrell. Inside presence from Baakir Christian and Makyia Kenney has helped anchor the rebounding effort, while the Lakers' defensive pressure has been a key factor in many wins this season.
Head Coach Ashley Martin commented on the postseason opportunity, saying:
"I'm really proud of how this group has competed all season. We've grown a lot and faced a tough conference schedule. This time of year is about playing your best basketball, and we're excited for the opportunity to compete for a region championship."
Iowa Lakes will host No. 6 seed Northeast on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. inside Laker Gym. With a win, the Lakers would advance to the Region 11-B Championship on Monday, March 2 at 5:30 p.m., where they would face the winner of No. 2 NIACC vs. No. 7 Iowa Western at the higher remaining seed.
The higher-seeded regional champion will earn an automatic bid to the NJCAA National Tournament, while the lower-seeded champion advances to the North Central District Championship on March 7.
